Young Player at CAAS 2003 (Nashville)

Universal Picking Technique and Method™ is a revolutionary combination of Crossover Pick™ gear (see side bar below: Picks or Plectrum) and instruction methodology that facilitate the development of advanced guitar playing skills. Furthermore, today’s cutting-edge and increasingly popular guitar playing techniques, such as; finger-tapping on the fret board, string slapping & other harmonic effects and percussive expressions are made easier to execute and combine in a single musical arrangement using the new Crossover Pick™ technology.

The most popular musical instrument being played today, for both men & women, is the guitar. The beautiful musical tone, decades long growth in popular music that features the guitar, -the worldwide explosion in low-cost quality manufacturing- the instruments portability and the home recording revolution have all contributed to the growth of passionate guitar playing the world over.

Every creative guitarist must have a "Bag of Tricks" -so to speak- at the ready when playing opportunities arrive. Included in this "Bag of Tricks" are talent, musical knowledge and gear. The gear, such as, various guitar models, effect pedals & machines, amplifiers, microphones, recording equipment and picks are very important. Most critical, however, is the guitarist’s talent. That is, the musician’s (universal) playing skill and passion for the guitar.

In addition, the actively performing guitarist must apply a "Universal Technique" at a proficient level in order to perform in the varied music styles and blended styles that exist today. This Universal Technique is defined as the guitarist's ability to bring together the many left and right hand playing techniques, live effects devices and picking gear.

Historically, a musical style & associated playing technique, along with the gear used to create that style, developed together. Although these music styles and their related techniques are still taught together as a unit, (that is, in most of the written guitar instructional material available today) development of many new musical compositions have fused several styles or blended them in creative ways. So too will developers of new instructional material provide methods that systematically help the guitarist develop and implement a "Universal Picking Technique" for performing the new music.

In conclusion, Universal Picking Technique and Method™ is a skill development program designed to help the guitarist develop a "Universal Technique" for playing the complex variety of music arrangements existing today. The Strum-N-Comfort product line of Crossover picks was developed to accomplish two important goals. First, the flexible & comfortable picks and associated instructional method helps the guitarist through important skill development steps and aids them in bringing separate techniques together. Secondly, the various crossover pick models are designed for the discriminating professional guitarist that will select and fully adjust the pick to meet new musical challenges.

Watch for the Kodiak Crossover Pick to soon be in production!

Picks or Plectrum

The guitar pick or plectrum used in a musical composition for guitar influences both tone and playing technique.

There are three basic types of picks in use today. They are:

  1. Flat Pick
  2. Thumb Pick
  3. Crossover Pick™

The Crossover Pick™ is a hybrid of the first two pick types. That is, a flexible pick that attaches to the players thumb for the purpose of facilitating the blending of separate playing techniques.

Selecting arrangements that develop style & rythmn

A Universal Picking Technique instruction Book, CD and Crossover Pick gear is under development and contains the initial musical arrangements necessary for gaining the skills listed above and is focused primarily at the intermediate and advanced player level.

Companion books or teaching web sites may be recommended to players for their basic information. That is, where music & professional player history, purchasing a guitar, gear, vocabulary, changing strings, holding the instrument, basic music theory, chords, notation & tabulation, fret board knowledge and basic skill introduction is concerned, players will be referred to other resources.

The CD included with the Universal Picking Technique book and Crossover Pick gear will feature the musical arrangements played by the author (Steve Trovato) and are expressed musically with a progressive level of difficulty (see Difficulty Factors above).

The CD will also feature special bonus material that may include video, graphics, text and Internet links. Internet links are a very important component and success factor for the Universal Picking Technique Teaching Method.

Internet partners will be utilized to serve as the repository for new practice arrangements that teach Universal Picking Technique.

Professional musician?s the world over are now contributing original music along with the written skill development notation that adheres to the Universal Picking Technique Teaching method.
